O2I Provided HVAC Modeling of 19-Story Commercial Building for American General Contractor

Case Study on HVAC Modeling of 19-Story Commercial Building for American General Contractor

The Client

Our client is an American HVAC and MEP contractor. They began in the early 20th century and are currently a leader in the industry. They have a fantastic reputation in the AEC industry for their services as a specialty general contractor. With more than 80 years of experience as a company, the reputation is well-earned.

The company has worked with many high-profile firms, general contractors, and project owners, and together, they have created architectural masterpieces. Some specific projects they have worked on include transportation systems, water treatment plants, educational buildings, high-rises, and more.

They wanted HVAC modeling done in Autodesk Revit, which is something our team specializes in. After several discussions about the details and specific requirements, they also requested a coordinated Revit file by doing detailed clash detection of the MEP systems.

Specifically, the project required a dynamic HVAC modeling of a 19-story building. The client was able to provide the AutoCAD files required for the project and the HVAC drawings. They also sent us the architectural floor plans in Navisworks for extra reference.

Project Challenges

Not only did this project take place during a global pandemic, but they requested a turnaround time of three weeks. Given the circumstances, this was a very tight window, especially considering there was more than one component to the project. We had to create the HVAC modeling and the clash detection file.

To handle such a fast timeline, we put ten specialist MEP engineers on the project, all of who are proficient in Navisworks. This ensured we would meet the deadline.

The Solution

The tight time frame was the only real issue with this project, as our experts are quite experienced, and this particular job was not a hard one. Our knowledgeable team got straight to work and made a plan to keep everyone on the same page -

  1. Once our team received HVAC drawings and floor plan files, they studied the references and created a team of ten - nine engineers and one quality control specialist to oversee the whole thing.
  2. We divided the project into seven milestones. The team started their work on the top floor of the building and worked their way down.
  3. Our team created the HVAC models in Revit and sent them for quality check before going in for clash detection.
  4. As each milestone was completed, we shared the files with the client so they could provide thoughts and feedback, which would be considered as the team moved forward.
  5. We then imported the models into Navisworks where we removed the clashes.
  6. After addressing the client's final feedback, we sent them the final coordinated Revit file, without clashes.

Results

The project results were great, and the client was extremely happy with the precise and accurate models that successfully met all their needs and incorporated their input. They were also quite happy that the same team was able to deliver them the coordinated file and clash detection. They would have had to look for, yet another vendor had our team been unable to accommodate both their requests.

Overall, this project ended on a high and happy note with the client promising more work would be available for us in the future.
