Dashboards are the be-all and end-all of Web Analytics, the most powerful tool of the manager to take decisions about his business performance. Dashboards are reports varying from a single excel sheet to 20-30 page reports, that include the KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) being measured using Web Analytics.
Web Analytics Dashboards have to include just the right amount of information in it. More could mean information overload, making it impossible to take decision and less could mean lack of information to take decisions. Dashboards have to be designed keeping in mind the business goals, the website goals, the goal of the particular person looking at the report, relevance of the information and whole lot of other factors.
An ideal dashboard should be good-looking, easy-to-read, not too big or too small and should also provide insights, which helps a manager to take decisions. 10-15 minutes spent on the dashboard should give the manager an idea about where the business is heading, what to focus and what not to focus.
Based on our own research, or in consultation with the customer, we assess the website so that we have a thorough understanding of the website. This involves study of the different sections within the website, the navigation architecture, optimal path to be followed by a visitor, number and type of goal pages and the overall website objective.
Key Performance Indicators are the metrics that matter to a website. The KPIs could be decided for each section of the website (in case separate web traffic reports are needed for the sections) or for the website as a whole. It’s important to note that KPIs are different for different roles within the organization. These KPIs are then communicated to the customer so that we can mutually arrive at a decision on what is to be measured.
A website would need one or more dashboards depending on the number of people looking at it, the divisions or sections in a website and KPIs decided during Stage II. We make sure that our dashboards are good-looking, short and easy-to-understand. Dashboard designs would also be finalized in consultation with the customer.
Once the KPIs are decided on and the Dashboards designed, the information needs to be keyed in from the Web Analytics software. This would involve creation of labels, setting filters, inclusions/exclusions, setting up content groups etc. Read more about this in our Software Configuration Services. There would be external data sources too, in addition to what is available from the Web Analytics software, like money spent on Search Marketing campaigns, number of orders etc. The data thus obtained is filled in the dashboards.
Dashboards could also be automatically generated from the Web Analytics software that the customer is using. Scheduling and Email alerts are also possible in certain web analytics softwares.
Depending on the options available the Dashboards are either manually sent to the concerned persons or automatically scheduled.
Reading a Dashboard is difficult if you have no primary understanding of what exactly to look at. In spite of keeping our Dashboards simple, we make sure that the person receiving the report can understand what to look at, and how to take decisions based on the information.
