Well it's a little late, but a Happy New Year to one and all. It hasn't been the best start to the year, with thousands of people from so many different countries devastated by the horrific earthquake and resultant tsunamis in South Asia. Just goes to show that despite all of us being from different places all around the globe, the world is still a very small place. With tourists visiting several of the affected areas, nations which are thousands of miles away from the devastated region have also lost many of its citizens as several tourists holidaying were as unprepared as the locals. It's been a very sad start to the New Year for so many.
Speaking of a small world, other than the catastrophic events like this which bring people together, there are some other such phenomenon that make the world seem much smaller. Outsourcing, for instance, has erased geographical boundaries and removed the idea that only certain parties have a right over particular jobs, information, or knowledge. With companies utilizing the expertise and talent of people in other parts of the world geographical boundaries have come to mean very little.
One of the trends which is being fuelled by outsourcing is the hiring of temporary or temp workers. This is not really a new trend having its origins in the 1940s, but it is something that is fast catching on in India. Several companies prefer hiring people on a short term basis as and when the need arises. There may be a particular project that may require a specialist for about three months, or one might not want to hire a full time employee for something that is not core to your business, for example an accountant being hired around the time when tax returns have to be filed, or it may be a way to counter rising attrition rates where even if an employee leaves the temp sourcing company can send someone else over as a replacement, or you hire a team of specialists who will work with your inhouse team for a while and by the time they leave your inhouse team would be well versed in the new work as well. All this makes hiring temps quite an attraction for people wanting to outsource as once again cost effectiveness will also come into the picture as one can hire temps who are extremely well qualified for a fraction of the cost that a permanent employee or even a temp in countries like the US might cost. This makes the marketplace ever evolving and extremely flexible.
