Bangalore is synonymous with outsourcing and the technology savvy city accounts for a third of the outsourced work in the country. With some of the most talented and experienced IT professionals in India, reasonably good infrastructure, great weather, the cosmopolitan character of the city, it's no wonder that it attracts a considerable amount of the outsourcing work. However, Bangalore was originally the "pensioner's paradise", a retirement city which had a sleepy cantonment air about it with gardens and a charming aura surrounding it. The spurt in outsourcing with companies setting up centers here, a huge enflux of professionals swarming into the city to be a part of the buzz, a growing number of restaurants, pubs, malls, cinema halls, etc to cater to the entertainment needs of an ever growing population, an increasing number of vehicles on the roads are taking a toll on the erstwhile small town which has to ramp up in terms of infrastructure...roads, power supply, commercial and living space, etc.
It's fine to be attracting the world with your vast pool of talented professionals, excellent quality work, fine weather, and other such things, but a lot has to be done in terms of ensuring that Bangalore does not crumble under the load, which is already showing. There is no dearth of talent and expertise in the country and expanding operations to other cities and towns are being explored by several companies. However, Bangalore still remains the "hot spot" and sitting back and believing that it will continue to remain so if nothing is done to improve the city's infrastructure is foolish. The city's reputation as the "Silicon Valley" of India is well established, but efforts have to be made to ensure that this reputation stays intact.
The IT giants of the city, Wipro, Infosys, and several others have already voiced their disapproval of how things are going currently and this pressure should hopefully get officials to take Bangalore to the next level. It shouldn't turn out that the outsourcing boom turns on the city which has nurtured it. However, as of right now the outsourcing scene is strong in Bangalore and by the looks of it will continue to be. The excellent work being done here, from simple back office work to more complex research and development, continues to attract scores of global companies. However, there has to be a balance as a great work force and good quality work cannot sustain Bangalore's reputation forever. Just as the countries outsourcing have to learn to cope with globalization and constantly reinvent themselves to prosper, India must also realize that cities like Bangalore cannot cease to adapt to the constant changes. Unless you ensure that the whole picture is taken care of it won't be long before it begins to fade.
